Oh, Curtis.

I don't really have much of an opinion on the Cathie Black controversy--probably because I don't have kids in the New York City school system. But I had to roll my eyes at Curtis Sliwa's guest editorial today. I know he's kind of paid to be a clown but it was over the top even by his usual standards. Basically, I find the NY1 Wiseguys pretty annoying. I want to like them but they aren't funny enough. And the Wiseguys persona seems wrong for an editorial.

In other news, tonight is the New York Financial Writers Association's annual Financial Follies, aka Financial Prom, as someone called it. Basically, PR people buy tables and invite journalists, and everyone gets hammered while eating tough steak and watching song-and-dance numbers that send up what happened in the markets in the last year. Everyone knows reporters love booze AND follies, but I can't drag myself this year. Too soon after another schmoozy, formal thing I had to do for work. Too bad-I was hoping for some celebrity spotting, like Annika or Diane. I spotted Pat one year but was too shy to talk to him. Probably because I wouldn't know what to say. "Dude--you're on TV!" Anyway, if you are going, have fun and tell any NY1 people you see that NY2 said hello.

Friday!

It's Friday! I'm as happy about that as Jamie Shupak usually is.

Lots of amusing items on In the Papers this morning:

* Mayor Bloomberg's favorite diner gets a C grade in health inspections. I gotta be honest here-my favorite takeout places (Ghang, Hanco's, Zaytoons, etc) would basically have to fail before I stopped going to them.

* Pat's half-hearted Sarah Palin impersonation and the thinly disguised disdain with which he described her "reality" program

* The revelation that New Yorkers spend $165 million a year at suburban Wal Marts. I'd personally rather be beaten up than go to Wal Mart. (Just look at peopleofwalmart.com some time. Because it really is like that.) When I'm in the suburbs I make a beeline for Target. The ones here in the city don't count.

OK, off to work. Happy Friday y'all.

Hello again and Pat's makeup tips

Once upon a time I updated this blog semi-regularly. It stopped around the beginning of 2010. There is a very logical reason for that. I started a new job in January, got engaged in February, got married in July and then moved to a new apartment in September—just in time for the busiest two months of the year at my new gig. Whew!

It was a whirlwind—an exhilarating, totally exhausting whirlwind—but things are more or less back to normal now. Which means I am hoping to get back to posting meaningless stuff and nonsense about my favorite network again. I have been updating on twitter as @newyorktwo, if you want to follow me there also.

What inspired me to post again today is a link on Pat’s Papers, via Gothamist—as you know from watching In the Papers yesterday, Pat does his own hair and makeup. Gothamist had the brilliant idea to call him up and ask for his hair and makeup tips, which he was generous enough to supply.

Anyone who knows me knows I am from Texas. And we Texas women do love our makeup. Despite having lived in the northeast for half my life, I have a makeup case the size of a small SUV. And believe you me, I know how to make a hairdo that’s good and big and won’t move for hours. So naturally I loved this article. And I have some tips to add to Pat’s tips:

Number two made me laugh (the easiest way to remove eye makeup is to not wear it in the first place). That is true. An addendum I might gently add for the lady anchors of NY1 is that the smoky eye is definitely not a daytime look. Sticking to neutral shadows only before 6 PM is your best bet.

And I definitely laughed out loud that he insists on saying “It’s for TV” when he goes makeup shopping at Bloomingdale’s. Pat, just go to the MAC store. Not only are they delighted to put makeup on men (Ru Paul was their longtime spokesman/woman/person), they are generally acknowledged as being one of the best for stage/theater makeup. But if you need to assert your masculinity, go right ahead. (“IT’S A EUROPEAN CARRY-ALL!”)

And the tip about hairspray is absolutely true. My favorite is L’oreal’s Elnet. It’s expensive for a drugstore brand and it smells like your grandma’s perfume, but your hair will be bulletproof.

That’s all for now…

Buh bye, Dominic.

So yesterday, the New York Post, which has been faithfully chronicling the down fall of Dominic Carter, reported yesterday that NY1 made it officially official that Carter is out, having decided not to renew Carter's contract. (An aside - please note how awesome the station's spokeswoman's name is. Nikia Redhead! That sounds like a stripper or a Bond girl. Also, why isn't this my last name? She had better be an actual redhead.)

Today, they reported that he will go "from 'Inside City Hall' to 'Inside the Rockland County Jail' today and will serve one month in jail. He's really lucky it's not more - apparently her injuries were not serious enough to hold the original charge, so it was downgraded.

In yesterday's "In the Papers," Pat pointed to the story about Carter being nixed and said that he's saddened by it. I am, too. He had been one of the best journalists at the station, but he was clearly a troubled person who subjected his wife to years of misery and abuse. He cited his tough childhood in his court testimony, but that's no excuse. He also lost journalistic credibility when he tried to use his connections to sway the judge. It's really a remarkable fall from grace, and the station is much better off without him.

Also yesterday, Ruschelle Boone went to Queens to interview several Hatian Americans who are trying to track down family members after the horrible earthquake. It was pretty touching and sad, as is the whole wretched saga. I mean, even Roger Clark is being serious in his reporting about it.

Well, on that chipper note- happy Friday!
